Class 5: Website/Blog Creation For a Teen Business
What is a blog?
“Blog” is an abbreviated version of “weblog,” which is a term used to describe websites that maintain an ongoing chronicle of information. A blog features diary-type commentary and links to articles on other websites, usually presented as a list of entries in reverse chronological order. Blogs range from the personal to the political, and can focus on one narrow subject or a whole range of subjects.
Your website/blog will be the hub of your online journey of written articles, videos (vlog), or pictures. You can do what-ever you'd like! Once it’s set up correctly, people from all over the world will find your website hungry to read your articles, look at your pictures, or watch your videos. Your business will grow as people subscribe to your content by providing their email addresses.
Many blogs focus on a particular topic, such as web design, sports, reviews of all sorts, or mobile technology. Some are more eclectic, presenting links to all types of other sites. And others are more like personal journals, presenting the author’s daily life and thoughts. How would you start yours? There is no wrong answer!
Generally speaking (although there are exceptions), blogs tend to have a few things in common.
A main content area with articles listed chronologically, newest on top. Often, the articles are organized into categories. An archive of older articles.
A way for people to leave comments about the articles.
A list of links to other related sites, sometimes
To create a blog, you’ll have to create a simple website. A blog is a page in a website. It’s never been easier to create beautiful and fully functioning websites. When I started blogging many years ago, I first utilized Google’s blogging platform called Blogger.com. I transitioned over to another popular blog platform called Wordpress. These two blog platforms were free and allowed me to easily create my content. Now, blogger.com is not very exciting and wordpress.com is no longer free. It’s also not as friendly as my new favorite website building platform WIX.com.
The website creation process has never been so easy. WIX intelligent ADI walks you through the entire process by asking you simple questions. It will ask about your business/niche and then ask you what types of pages you would like to include on your website, including a blog. You can create multiple websites on the same account. The best part is that it’s free for our purposes.
The caveat is that you will have limited functionality and your domain (web address) will look like this:
http://yourname.wixsite.com/yournewbusinessname
Instead of what you ideally want:
www.yournewbusinessname.com
Eventually, you can opt into the paid plan and register your domain name with Wix.com. If you choose to remain with the free version, you can still share the long “wix” link wherever you want. This way you can start building your following and subscriber list.
SUBSCRIBERS - EMAIL LISTS
When someone subscribes to your blog they become a part of your business. They can potentially stay with you on your journey for the rest of your online career, if they don’t unsubscribe. Your subscribers are following you because you are offering value to their lives. Continue offering great content because there is a good chance they will ultimately purchase the products or services that you recommend.
An email list is so important, not only to continue building and sustaining your business, but for your future. If you collect enough email addresses, you could potentially sell your business for a substantial amount of money. Currently, you’ll be collecting emails from the subscriber opt-in on your blog. Eventually, we will want to use an email marketing service (with an auto-responder) called AWeber or Mail Chimp which can help automate followup emails.
For now, be sure that people are subscribing to your blog/website, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, and other platforms. A high volume of followers and subscribers equals high profits for now and for your future!
CALL TO ACTION:
Create your new WIX blog with your brand name.
Spend some time on the site becoming familiar with the site features.
Try changing some of the images. Wix offers free photos that you can use to replace the blog’s default photos.
